What is earlobe repair / reduction?

Earlobe repair or earlobe reduction surgery is a collective term for a group of ear plastic surgery procedures designed to reshape, resize, and repair the earlobe. This can include earlobe reduction, earlobe repair, stretched earlobe surgery, ear fold surgery, and keloid ear surgery.

The procedure may be required to correct genetic abnormalities in earlobe size and shape, or damage caused by heavy ear jewellery or the ageing process. Heavy earrings worn over a prolonged period can stretch the pierced hole or, in the worst case, cause the lobe to split completely. Earlobe repair is also commonly used to reverse damage caused by tribal jewellery.

Why do people have earlobe repair?

Medical reasons: to repair torn, stretched, or split earlobes caused by injury, heavy earrings, or previous piercings; to correct congenital deformities or asymmetry of the earlobe; to restore earlobe structure and comfort for wearing earrings or hearing aids; to reconstruct the earlobe following the removal of an earlobe cyst.

Aesthetic reasons: to improve the appearance of the earlobe for a more balanced and youthful look; to restore smooth contour and proportion between both ears; to increase confidence in wearing jewellery or hairstyles that expose the ears.

How does earlobe repair work?

Before the procedure, a local anaesthetic is administered to numb the area. The surgeon makes incisions to open the earlobe ready for reshaping, removes excess skin, and closes the lobe using a 'W-plasty' technique (zig-zag stitching) to prevent notching during healing. For stretched earlobes, the excess redundant skin is cut away and skin flaps may be required to restore a natural result.

Keloid ear surgery removes keloids surgically with or without the use of other injected materials such as botulinum toxin and intralesional steroids.

Frequently asked questions

What is a torn, split, or expanded earlobe?

A torn or split earlobe occurs when the pierced hole is stretched or torn by heavy earrings, trauma, or deliberate stretching (gauging). An expanded earlobe has a stretched or elongated piercing hole. All of these conditions can be repaired surgically under local anaesthetic.

When should I have my earlobe repaired?

You should seek repair once the earlobe has fully healed following any injury or trauma. If the lobe is currently inflamed or infected, treatment should be sought first before surgical repair is considered. There is no upper age limit for earlobe repair.

What results can I expect from earlobe repair?

Earlobe repair restores a natural-looking earlobe with minimal scarring. The scar fades over several months. For those wishing to re-pierce, this is usually possible approximately six weeks after the repair has fully healed.

Is earlobe repair painful?

The procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic, so you will not feel pain during the surgery. Some mild soreness and tenderness can be expected in the days following, which is manageable with over-the-counter pain relief.

Will I be left with scars following earlobe repair?

A small, fine scar is inevitable following earlobe repair. The W-plasty technique used by our surgeons minimises the risk of notching and helps the scar to heal as neatly as possible. Scars fade considerably over 3–6 months.

Will I be able to wear earrings again after earlobe repair?

In most cases, yes. Re-piercing is typically possible approximately six weeks after the earlobe has fully healed. Your surgeon will advise on the best timing and location for re-piercing.

What are the risks for earlobe repair?

Risks are minimal but include infection, scarring, asymmetry, and the small possibility of the repair breaking down. Your surgeon will discuss all risks with you at consultation.
