What is otoplasty?

Ear reshaping surgery — also known as otoplasty, pinnaplasty, and ear reduction surgery — refers to a range of common surgical procedures designed to correct the size and shape of the ear and earlobe. Otoplasty is a safe and effective surgery that can improve the function and appearance of the ear, as well as the patient's self-image.

Typical procedures include: Pinnaplasty — to pin back prominent ears. Ear reduction — to reduce the size of the ears. Ear correction — to correct deformities caused at birth or by trauma.

Otoplasty can also be used to: reduce large or overstretched earlobes (caused by earrings or ear stretching); reshape cartilage that has an unnatural shape; increase the size of a very small ear; rebuild new ears (e.g. if born without an ear or earlobe); smooth wrinkles or large creases.

At a glance

Surgery time: Approximately 1 hour. Time off work: A few days. Hospital stay: Day case. Shower: After 1 day. Exercise: After 2 weeks. Full recovery: Approximately 4 weeks.

Who is suitable?

Otoplasty may be suitable if you have: prominent or protruding ears; asymmetrical ears; oversized or disproportionate ear size; damaged or extended ear lobes; unsatisfying results from a previous ear-pinning procedure. Patients must be physically and psychologically fit and healthy, with realistic expectations.

Frequently asked questions

Am I suitable for otoplasty?

Otoplasty may be suitable if you have prominent or protruding ears, asymmetrical ears, oversized ears, damaged earlobes, or unsatisfactory results from a previous procedure. Suitable candidates should be in good general health, with realistic expectations. Children can have otoplasty once the ears have reached near-adult size, typically from around age 5–6 onwards.

How long does otoplasty surgery take?

Otoplasty typically takes approximately one hour to perform.

What are the different types of ear reshaping surgery?

The main types include pinnaplasty (pinning back prominent ears), ear reduction (reducing the size of overly large ears), and ear correction (correcting deformities present at birth or caused by trauma). Each technique is tailored to the individual patient's anatomy and goals.

Is otoplasty painful?

The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia, so patients do not feel pain during surgery. Post-operative discomfort — including soreness and tightness — is normal and manageable with prescribed or over-the-counter pain relief. A headband worn during recovery helps protect the ears.

What is the recovery process for otoplasty?

Most patients can return to work or school within a few days, though a protective headband must be worn for several weeks. Exercise should be avoided for 2 weeks, and contact sports for longer. Full recovery takes approximately 4 weeks. Swelling and numbness may take longer to fully resolve.

Will I have scars after otoplasty?

Incisions are made in the natural crease behind the ear, so any scarring is well-concealed and not visible from the front. Scars fade over time.

What are the risks associated with otoplasty?

Risks include infection, haematoma, asymmetry, over- or under-correction, recurrence of prominent ears, altered sensation, and the general risks associated with anaesthesia. Your surgeon will discuss all risks at consultation.

Can children have otoplasty?

Yes. Children can have otoplasty once their ears have reached near-adult size, generally from around age 5–6 onwards. Operating in childhood can help address the social and psychological impact of prominent ears before they affect the child's confidence at school.
