What are steroid injections?

Steroid injections are a targeted treatment to soothe painful, sore, and stiff joints and tendons. For hand conditions, they can help to treat a number of common conditions affecting the hands, wrists, and fingers, and are also effective in alleviating pain and inflammation of the joints caused by injury.

  • Conditions treated
  • Joint pain following injury.
  • Trigger finger (tendon inflammation).
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome.
  • Arthritis-related joint pain.
  • Inflammation of the tendon sheath.

Frequently asked questions

How do steroid injections work?

Steroids such as triamcinolone reduce inflammation in the affected area. When injected directly into a joint or around a tendon, it can significantly reduce pain and swelling, improving function and range of movement.

How long do steroid injections last?

The duration of effect varies between individuals and conditions. Some patients experience relief for several months; for others, the effect may be shorter. In some cases, a repeat injection may be appropriate.

Are steroid injections painful?

The injection itself may cause a brief moment of discomfort, particularly if administered into a small joint or tendon sheath. A local anaesthetic is often injected into the skin at the entry point for the injection, or mixed with the steroid to minimise discomfort. Some patients experience a temporary 'steroid flare' of increased pain for 24–48 hours following the injection.

How many injections can I have?

The number of injections recommended depends on the condition being treated and the individual patient's response. Generally, no more than three injections are recommended into any one site, as repeated steroid injections can weaken surrounding tissue over time. Your doctor will advise on what is appropriate for your situation.

What are the risks of steroid injections?

Risks include a temporary flare of pain and inflammation (steroid flare), infection at the injection site, skin thinning or colour change at the injection site, and, with repeated injections, weakening of surrounding tendons or tissues. Injection into joints or tendon sheaths is associated with the rare but serious complication of joint infection (septic arthritis) or tendon sheath infection (infective tenosynovitis). These are serious conditions requiring intravenous antibiotics and sometimes surgery to control the infection. Steroids can temporarily raise blood sugar levels, which is particularly relevant for patients with diabetes. In patients undergoing drug testing for sports, the metabolites of steroid may show in urine samples for a few days after treatment.
