What is mole removal?

Mole removal is a simple procedure to remove a mole from the skin. It may be recommended if a mole looks suspicious, is changing in appearance, causes irritation, or if you would like it removed for cosmetic reasons.

Your dermatologist will examine the mole first to decide the best method of removal. Depending on the type and location of the mole, it may be:

  • Shaved off using a small surgical blade for raised moles.
  • Surgically excised, where the entire mole is removed along with a small margin of surrounding skin. Stitches will be needed.

The mole will be sent to a laboratory for testing to confirm the diagnosis.

Most mole removal procedures are performed under local anaesthetic, take only a short time, and allow you to return to your normal activities soon afterwards. Your dermatologist will provide advice on wound care and discuss the expected healing and potential scarring.

We recommend seeking professional attention if you notice any of the following: the mole is changing colour, the mole is changing shape or size, the mole is inflamed, itchy or painful.

What makes our mole removal service different?

Dermatologist-led: every mole removal patient is seen and treated by a trained dermatologist/plastic surgeon. Our plastic surgeons and dermatologists provide support for complex removal cases or reconstructions. We offer rapid same-day removal: we are able to offer same-day removal of worrisome moles using our fully staffed on-site procedure rooms, where suitable.

Removal techniques

We offer a variety of techniques to remove moles, ranging from shave excision for smaller, often raised moles to full excision with sutures for larger moles. Each surgery is discussed directly with your surgeon prior to the procedure being carried out. Procedures typically take less than half an hour.

The ABCDE mole checklist

The following checklist is a useful guide for self-examination at home. If you notice any changes to your moles or freckles, always seek professional advice.

A — Asymmetry: one half of the mole looks different from the other.

B — Border: a ragged, irregular or notched border.

C — Colour: multiple colours such as black, tan, brown, red, pink, grey, white or blue.

D — Diameter: most melanomas measure more than 6 mm in diameter.

E — Evolving: any change in size, shape, colour or any other characteristic.

What to expect

Your consultant will examine the mole, explain whether removal is recommended and agree the best approach with you. Removal is usually done under local anaesthetic, with the tissue sent for laboratory analysis where needed.

What can we treat on the day

Where it is clinically appropriate, many moles and small skin lesions can be removed during the same visit as your consultation. Your consultant will confirm this at your appointment.

Frequently asked questions

How long does mole removal take?

The whole process does not usually take longer than half an hour.

What happens during a mole removal?

Moles are usually removed under local anaesthetic. After careful examination, the area around the mole is marked, cleaned and a surgical drape placed around it to ensure a sterile working area. The surgeon cuts all the way around the mole, typically in an oval shape. The mole(s) are placed in a specimen jar and sent to a lab for analysis. The wound is closed with stitches if required and covered with a dressing.

What happens after mole removal?

You will be able to go home after your procedure and return to work. It is unusual for such a minor procedure to impact your usual activities apart from sporting activities. You will be given a post surgery information sheet detailing how to take care of the wound. If you experience any pain, over-the-counter relief such as paracetamol can be used. Results of the analysis will typically be shared with you within 14 days.

Is mole removal effective?

Mole removal is the most comprehensive safeguard against skin cancer and is recommended for anyone worried about their moles.

Can I get a mole removed for cosmetic reasons?

Absolutely. This is an extremely common reason for requesting mole removal often due to catching on clothing and awkward location with shaving. Our team are more than happy to assist.

Can I remove moles on the face?

Yes. People often choose to remove facial moles for cosmetic reasons. Our doctors include highly experienced plastic surgeons who will discuss the best surgical technique to remove facial moles. Facial moles are removed under local anaesthetic and the tissue sent for pathological examination. Stitches if placed are typically removed after 5–7 days.

Will mole removal leave a scar?

Complete removal of a mole will leave a scar, the size of which is dependent on the size of the mole. Our surgeons aim to minimise scarring by closing the wound in the direction of least tension (for example, along smile lines on the face). The scar will fade over time. Some people are more prone to scarring such as the formation of hypertrophic/keloid scarring, and your surgeon will discuss this with you at consultation.

What is a cancerous mole?

Most moles remain perfectly fine throughout a lifetime, but if you notice signs that a mole has changed in shape, size or colour, it is wise to have it checked by a dermatologist. Moles can also be precancerous lesions (melanoma in situ) — changes that are not yet cancer but could become cancer over time. Skin cancer can be cured if found and treated early.

What should I do if I have a bleeding or itchy mole?

Bleeding or itchy moles can occur when they have been irritated or scratched. However, these can also be signs of skin cancer. If you have a new mole or notice changes such as bleeding, changes in shape, size or colour, or itchiness, seek medical advice at the earliest possible stage. An early diagnosis is crucial.
