Frequently asked questions
Booking & referrals
Do I need a GP referral?
No. You can book a See & treat appointment or mole mapping directly, without a referral. If your GP or consultant has referred you, please have the referral letter to hand when you book.
How quickly can I be seen?
Most patients are seen within two weeks of contacting us, and many sooner. Where suitable, your procedure can often take place at the same appointment.
What is See & treat?
See & treat lets you be assessed by a consultant and, where clinically appropriate, treated in the same visit. It suits most skin lesions, moles and minor procedures, saving you a second appointment and a second wait. It is not suitable for inflammatory dermatoses or hair loss.
How do I book?
Call us on 01 726 7500, email info@surgicalinstitute.ie.
See & treat costs
How much does a See & treat consultation cost?
The consultation (the “See” part of your appointment) is €300, charged on a self-pay basis.
Can I claim the consultation back from my health insurance?
You may be able to reclaim some of the cost, depending on your level of cover. Check your outpatient benefits with your insurer.
What if I need a procedure?
If your consultant recommends a procedure (the “Treat” part), our team will help you check your health insurance cover in advance. Excesses may apply, depending on your policy.
What if I don’t have health insurance?
You can pay for yourself. A See & treat consultation is €300, and the cost of a procedure if required is explained to you before it goes ahead.
Will I know the cost before I agree to treatment?
Yes. Nothing goes ahead until the cost has been explained to you and you are happy to proceed.
Mole mapping
Who runs mole mapping?
Mole mapping is carried out by our clinical nurse specialist using advanced full-body imaging.
What happens to my results?
If a consultant dermatologist referred you, the report goes back to them for review. If you referred yourself or were referred by your GP, a consultant dermatologist reviews your results with you during a full body skin examination, and a copy of the report is sent to your GP.
How much does mole mapping cost?
Mole mapping is €350 if you are referred by a consultant dermatologist, and your report is sent back to them for review. If you refer yourself or are referred by your GP, it is €550, which includes mole mapping plus a full body skin examination by a consultant dermatologist at Surgical Institute Dublin. A €50 deposit is taken at booking and deducted from your fee. It is refunded if you cancel at least 48 hours before your appointment.
Is mole mapping covered by health insurance?
Mole mapping is not routinely covered by health insurance. Some plans offer partial cover or outpatient benefits, so check with your insurer before booking.
How often should I have my moles mapped?
We recommend annual mapping, so your moles can be compared against your baseline images over time.
Your visit
Where are you?
We are on the ground floor of Embassy House, Herbert Park Lane, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4 (D04 H6Y0), opposite the Herbert Park Hotel.
Is there parking?
The Herbert Park Hotel, directly opposite Surgical Institute Dublin has a car park (charges apply) and offers 15 minutes of free set-down. Pay-and-display on-street parking is also available on Anglesea Road, Ballsbridge Terrace, Shelbourne Road and the surrounding streets.
What are your opening hours?
Monday to Friday, 7:30am to 7:30pm.
How long will I be at the clinic?
Most consultations and minor procedures take under an hour. Mohs surgery is different: please keep the whole day free, as the number of stages needed can’t be predicted in advance.
Will I be put to sleep?
No. All procedures at Surgical Institute Dublin are carried out under local anaesthetic, so you are awake and comfortable throughout and can go home the same day.
Can I drive home afterwards?
For most minor procedures, yes. After surgery near the eyes, on the face or on your hands, or after Mohs surgery, we recommend arranging for someone to take you home.
Insurance and payment
Which insurers do you work with?
We are recognised by VHI, Irish Life Health, Laya Healthcare, Level Health, Garda Medical Aid and the Prison Officers’ Medical Aid Society (POMAS). Cover depends on your plan, so please check with your insurer before your appointment.
Do I need pre-approval from my insurer?
Some procedures require pre-approval. Our team will let you know when you book and can help with the paperwork.
Can I pay for myself?
Yes. Self-pay is open to anyone. A See & treat consultation is €300, and the cost of any procedure is confirmed with you before it goes ahead.
Results and aftercare
When will I get my results?
If tissue is sent to the laboratory for analysis, your consultant will contact you with the results, usually within two to three weeks.
Who do I contact if I have a concern after my procedure?
You will leave with written aftercare instructions and a number to call. If you notice increasing pain, spreading redness, discharge or a fever, contact us straight away.
